Choosing fabric for family homes

Family life is hard on furniture. Between children, pets, spilt drinks and daily wear, the fabric you choose matters as much as the frame underneath. The good news: modern performance weaves look and feel beautiful — you don't have to trade style for durability. ## Understand the Martindale rub count Every upholstery fabric is tested for abrasion resistance and given a Martindale score. For a busy family sofa, aim for **30,000+ rubs** (heavy domestic). Contract-grade fabrics rated 40,000–100,000 are perfectly acceptable at home and will last noticeably longer under daily use. ## Best fabric types for family homes **Performance weaves (e.g. Aquaclean, Crypton, Warwick's Easyclean).** Engineered so most water-based spills lift with just warm water. Excellent for young children and messy eaters. Look and feel like conventional fabric — no plastic sheen. **Wool and wool-blends.** Naturally stain-resistant, flame-retardant and self-refreshing. Slightly higher upfront cost but ages beautifully over 15–20 years. **Heavy linens and linen-blends.** Softer look than performance fabrics; choose a tight weave and darker or textured colours to disguise wear. **Chenille and boucle.** Deep, tactile pile that hides marks well. Look for tightly woven backs — loose weaves are vulnerable to cat claws. ## Fabrics to think twice about - **Silk and pure viscose:** water-marks easily - **Loose-weave linens:** snag on claws and pull threads - **Pale flat weaves in high-traffic seats:** show every stain - **Bonded leather:** peels within 3–5 years — not the same as real leather ## Colour and pattern choices that work - Mid-tone colours (sage, clay, ochre, charcoal) hide daily marks better than cream or navy - Textured weaves disguise wear better than flat cloth - Small-scale patterns and heathered mixes camouflage crumbs and paw prints - Removable, washable seat covers are worth asking about at quote stage ## Living with pets Look for tightly woven fabrics with a smooth surface — cats find loops of chenille or boucle irresistible. Leather and faux-suede microfibres shrug off fur and wipe clean. Add a machine-washable throw over favourite sleeping spots and rotate it weekly. ## The practical test Before you commit, order a sample the size of a tea towel. Live with it for a week — drape it over the arm of your current sofa, drop a splash of tea on a hidden corner, rub it against a jumper. Fabrics look different in your own light, and this is the cheapest confidence you can buy. Any good upholsterer will happily send two or three samples in your favourite colourways so you can compare in the room they'll actually live in.
